The arms of the Vintage Bronze Leaf-Etched Crucifix flare outward and are notched at the edges, and every flat surface is filled with engraved leaf sprays and chevrons radiating from the crossing. The lines run close enough that the metal reads as textured cloth from a little distance, with the smooth figure of Christ laid over it.
The design belongs to a long European habit of treating the cross as a garden, the wood that killed Christ shown leafing out again. Medieval hymns called it the tree of life and the noblest of all trees, and metalworkers took them at their word, covering crucifixes in foliage until the instrument of death looked like something growing. Held through the sorrowful mysteries, it keeps the ending of the story quietly in view.
The leaf-etched crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the crucifix's vintage character.
