The Vintage Bronze Latin American Openwork Crucifix is almost as much air as metal. The arms end in scrolled loops pierced clean through, a foliate finial opens above the head, and below the feet the shaft closes in a large heart-shaped medallion of scrollwork that is open at every turn. Against all that movement the corpus is drawn long and thin with the arms stretched high, and that stretch is what gives the piece its urgency.
The original is eighteenth-century Latin American work. Colonial silversmiths from Mexico down through the Andes worked in exactly this vocabulary of pierced scrolls and foliate terminals, making crucifixes of the type both to be worn and to hang at the foot of a rosary. The reproduction keeps the openings crisp, so the whole design reads clearly against dark clothing.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
