The Vintage Bronze Latin American Folk Crucifix is a large piece, three inches long, cast in the plain and forceful manner of Latin American devotional metalwork. Flowers open at the ends of the arms and again in the finial above the head, Christ hangs in high relief with rays behind him, two small standing figures keep watch at the foot of the shaft, and a winged cherub head closes the very bottom of the cross.
The figures at the foot hold the place tradition gives to the Virgin and St. John, who stayed at the cross after everyone else had gone. The flowering arms carry an older idea still, the cross drawn as a living tree, the instrument of death shown as the thing that blossoms. Nothing is lettered anywhere on the piece. Its power lies in the directness of the modelling rather than in fineness of finish, and it is a cross made to be understood from across a room.
The folk crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
