The archangel drives downward with both hands on his spear at the dragon coiled beneath him, his body twisted into the thrust and his wings raised high behind his shoulders, the whole scene ringed by a wide border of leafy scrollwork.
Michael is the captain of the heavenly host, the archangel who cast the dragon out of heaven in the Book of Revelation and the protector Catholics invoke in every kind of danger. The prayer of Leo XIII asks him to defend us in battle and be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil, and this relief is that petition made visible. No lettering was cast into the piece; the fight is left to speak for itself, and at this size the medal has real weight in the hand.
