The Vintage Bronze Large Caravaca Cross is a double-barred cross, beaded along every edge, with the corpus modelled on the upper bar and two winged angels standing clear of the shaft below, each turned inward with a hand raised toward the wood. At the very foot, a small skull marks the place of Calvary.
The form takes its name from Caravaca de la Cruz in Spain, where a relic of the True Cross has been venerated since the thirteenth century. Local tradition holds that two angels carried the cross down into the castle chapel to a priest who had nothing to say Mass with, which is why the angels are almost never left out of the design. The Caravaca cross became one of the great protective devotions of Spain and the Spanish Americas, kept at doorways and over beds against harm. The antique original dates to the eighteenth century.
The cross was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
