The Vintage Bronze Italian Angel Crucifix is tall and slender, with square-cut arms and a corpus modelled in fine detail beneath a small rayed halo. A raised plate above the crossbar carries the titulus, and below the figure the shaft swells into a pierced cartouche where two winged angels lean in on either side of a central shield.
The titulus reads INRI, for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. At the base of the cartouche sit the skull and crossbones, the memento mori that eighteenth-century Italian crucifixes so often placed at the foot of the Cross, recalling Adam's skull on Golgotha and the death that the Crucifixion undoes. It is a somber note beneath all that angel work, and it is what keeps a crucifix of this form serious three centuries on.
