The Vintage Bronze Irish Penal Crucifix with Passion Symbols carries the shape that necessity gave it. The arms are short and the shaft long and narrow, so the whole crucifix closes inside a fist and slips up a sleeve. That was the form used through the penal years in Ireland, when practicing the faith carried real danger and Mass was said at a rock in the open with a lookout posted. The corpus lies small and flat against the wood-like shaft.
Across the head of the upright stands INRI, for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, with a spiked nimbus of rays behind the head. The Instruments of the Passion surround the figure in simple cast signs: a ladder running down the shaft, a spear, scourges on both arms, a hammer, and a heart at the foot. Two inches hold an entire meditation on the Passion.
