The whole surface of the Vintage Bronze Granulated Coptic Crucifix is covered in close rows of small raised beads, with heavier clustered bosses at the end of each stepped arm and at the foot. Christ is modelled smooth against that rough field, and the contrast between the two is the entire design.
Granulation is among the oldest techniques in metalwork, and in Coptic and Ethiopian hands it was used to make a cross glitter in candlelight without a line of engraving. The stepped, squared arms belong to the same tradition of the Nile valley, where Christianity has been practised without a break since the first centuries and a cross is something carried daily rather than displayed. The piece reads as far older than it is.
The granulated Coptic crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the crucifix's vintage character.
