The Vintage Bronze French Openwork Scroll Crucifix is pierced throughout and covered in scrollwork. Foliate volutes curl out of the arms, a rosette sits behind the head of Christ, and the foot opens into a broad fleur-de-lis of open scrolls. The corpus is small against all that ornament, set on a slender upright that the piercing leaves looking almost weightless.
Crucifixes of this kind belong to the great nineteenth-century French output of devotional metalwork, in which the cross was given the care of fine jewellery without ever ceasing to be a crucifix. The fleur-de-lis at the foot is the flower of France and an old Marian emblem besides, so the ornament is not idle: it sets the Passion in a garden of scrolls and lilies, the way French makers of that century liked to picture the triumph of the cross rather than the agony. It takes the light from behind as readily as from in front.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
