The Vintage Bronze Fleur-de-Lis Crucifix gives its whole surface over to ornament. Fleur-de-lis rise from the ends of each arm and from the foot, and the ground between them is filled with small foliate scrolls, so the corpus sits within a flowering field. Christ is modeled in higher relief than the background, his head fallen to his right, and the contrast of the smooth figure against the busy ground is the whole design.
The lily is Our Lady's flower, an emblem of purity carried in Christian art for centuries, and a cross covered in lilies quietly keeps the Mother at the foot of the Cross without ever showing her there. What the piece offers besides is patience: the pattern is repeated across a surface less than two inches tall without a single lapse in the cutting.
