The Vintage Bronze Figural Madonna and Child Medal follows the outline of the statue it copies. The Virgin stands in a robe and veil whose mantle falls in a stiff bell to the base, the Child held against her right side, their faces close together near the top. The surface is worked in bold folk relief and the whole piece stands an inch tall.
Medals shaped this way were made to carry the memory of one particular standing image, the statue of a home town, dressed and crowned and carried through the streets on her feast, so that a pilgrim could take its silhouette away in a pocket. The bell-shaped mantle is the mark of those dressed statues, found in shrines across the Mediterranean and Latin America. The small scale and heavy relief make it a piece that reads best in the hand.
