Every edge of the Vintage Bronze Feather Edge Openwork Crucifix curls. Feathered scrolls run out along the arms and gather into pierced teardrop terminals at each of the four ends, and more of the same scrollwork fills the shaft above the head and below the feet, leaving the metal as much void as solid. A slender corpus hangs quietly at the crossing.
Filigree crosses of this kind were made across the Spanish colonial world and in the traditions that followed it in Mexico and the Southwest of the United States, where the antique original belongs. The technique rewards a light hand, since the caster works almost in line rather than in mass, and the result reads as drawing more than as sculpture. Nothing is lettered on the piece. Its whole character lies in the play of open and closed metal, and in how much light it lets past a figure that stays perfectly still at the center.
The feather edge crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
