The Vintage Bronze Etched Crucifix with INRI Titulus is a piece of unusually clean line, its ornament engraved rather than modelled. The arms and the foot widen into pointed, leaf-shaped ends, each one filled with close chevron rays that catch the light as the crucifix turns, and against that ruled ground the figure of Christ stands out in soft, rounded relief.
Above the head is the titulus, a small raised tablet lettered INRI for the Latin Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” Pilate ordered those words fixed to the cross as a charge and a mockery; the Church has carried them ever since as a plain statement of fact, and their presence is what makes a cross a crucifix in the strict sense. The antique original is nineteenth-century European work.
The etched crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
