The Vintage Bronze Elongated Wood-Grain Crucifix is drawn out long and narrow, so that it reads as a line rather than a block. The arms and the shaft are cut with fine parallel striations in imitation of the grain of a rough-hewn timber, the small corpus is modelled with a light hand, the head fallen to the right, and a plain bar crosses the upright above the head.
The wood grain is the point of the design. It returns the crucifix to what it once was, two beams of ordinary timber cut and joined by someone doing a day's work for a wage, and away from the jeweller's version of the same shape. The effect is quiet and rather severe, closer to a wayside cross standing at the edge of a field than to anything made for display, and its slimness makes it easy to wear every day without thinking about it.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
