Every surface of the Vintage Bronze Diamond Openwork Cross is worked. A lattice of raised diamonds runs the length of the shaft and out along the arms, three of the terminals open into scalloped shells, and the block at the top is banded with woven and beaded courses like the collar of a reliquary.
There is no corpus and no lettering here. The pattern carries the devotion by itself, in the manner of the folk crosses made in workshops where ornament was the whole of a craftsman's vocabulary and a cross was expected to hold the eye the way a psalm holds the ear. A cross like this is meant to be handled. The antiquing settles into the recessed lattice while the raised diamonds take a polish from wear, so the pattern grows more distinct the longer the cross is carried.
The cross was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
