Nearly every part of the Vintage Bronze Delicate Openwork Crucifix is cut away. Fleur-de-lis terminals, trefoil piercings and a ground of fine scrollwork leave the cross reading as tracery, and the corpus set upon it is correspondingly small and delicately modelled. The same tracery repeats on the reverse without a figure, closing on a rosette at the crossing, so the piece is finished on both faces.
Work this fine was slow and skilled, and it survives far less often than heavier casting does, which is a good part of why the original was worth taking a mould from. The tracery is not only decoration: piercing the ground was how a devotional workshop let light into a cross, so the piece changes as it moves and never reads as a solid block of metal. The fleur-de-lis at the arm ends is a Marian sign, the lily of purity carried into the shape of the cross itself, and the thin sections come up a little differently on every casting.
The openwork crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
