Almost every surface of the Vintage Bronze Delicate Filigree Crucifix is worked. The arms widen to blunt octagonal ends, and the whole face is filled with scrolling foliage, small fleur-de-lis and beaded veins, with a rosette set behind the head of the corpus and a tall lily rising through the foot. Against all that ornament the figure of Christ is left smooth and unadorned, which is exactly how the eye is meant to find it.
Work of this kind was done for rosaries and wall crosses alike in the later nineteenth century, when a die-cutter's skill was measured by how fine a leaf he could carry into metal. The foliage is not idle decoration either: the flowering cross is one of the oldest ideas in Christian art, the dead wood of the execution breaking into leaf, and the lily at the foot names Mary standing there. The antiqued finish settles into the recesses and lets the whole pattern stand up clearly against the darker ground.
The filigree crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
