The Vintage Bronze Delicate Celtic Ringed Cross is pierced clean through, so that light passes between its ornaments. A ring joins the four arms in the old Insular manner, interlaced knotwork and scrolling foliate forms fill every surface within it, and a small square boss holds the crossing. Both faces are worked alike.
Ringed crosses of this kind descend from the great stone high crosses of Ireland and Scotland, where the circle set around the crossing was read as eternity and the endless interlace as the life that has no end, a knot with neither beginning nor finish, like the God it was cut for. There is no lettering anywhere on the piece; the ornament is the whole of its statement. Delicate is the right word for it, since at this size the openwork is fine enough to ask for a second look.
The cross was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
