The Vintage Bronze Crucifix Medal with Mary and St. John takes the whole Calvary group and gathers it into an inch and a quarter. Christ hangs at the center beneath a small crested canopy, and standing under the arms of the cross, one to each side, are two robed figures with their heads inclined toward him: the Virgin and the beloved disciple, the two whom John’s Gospel places at the foot of the cross.
Those few verses are the reason this grouping has been made and remade for centuries. From the cross Christ gives his mother to John and John to his mother, and the Church has read that exchange ever since as the moment Mary was given to every believer. The reverse is worked as well, a plain cross in relief with a small rosette at the crossing, so the medal has real depth in the hand rather than a hollow back.
This crucifix medal was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
