The Vintage Bronze Crown of Thorns Crucifix takes the crown off Christ's head and weaves it through the cross itself. An openwork braid of thorns fills the four angles behind the corpus, while the shaft and arms are left plain so the thorn work reads clearly. Christ is modeled with the drawn face and visible ribs this devotion asks for, the body spent and the weight all in the arms.
Above the head a raised tablet is lettered INRI, short for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. Set against the thorns, the title Pilate meant as mockery becomes the point of the whole piece: the crown of a king, made of what a field throws up, worn by the one who chose to wear it. It is a crucifix for Lent and for the Sorrowful Mysteries.
The Crown of Thorns Crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the crucifix's vintage character.
