The Vintage Bronze Coptic Cross is broad and flared, worked all over in fine raised granulation and edged with beading, and it carries a second cross within it, a slender rope-twist form laid down the center and across the arms. Small studs mark each terminal and a pointed drop finishes the foot.
The cross within a cross is an old device of the Coptic and Ethiopian traditions, where the endless interlacing stands for eternity, without beginning or end, and the doubling for the cross each believer is asked to carry. Egypt and Ethiopia have kept the cross this way since the earliest Christian centuries, worn openly at the throat as a mark of faith rather than tucked out of sight. Nothing on the piece is lettered; the whole statement is made in texture and repetition, and the granulated ground gives it the feel of far older metalwork.
