The Vintage Bronze Christ Child in the Manger Medal gives its whole round field to one small figure. The Christ Child lies on finely hatched straw, haloed, one arm lifted and his legs loosely crossed, with the rest of the ground left open around him.
It is the Nativity reduced to its center. No ox, no ass, no shepherds, no Mother bending over the crib, only the Child himself, and the raised arm is the gesture of blessing that Christian art has always given him. Devotion to the Holy Infant has long been kept this way, fixed on the smallness and the poverty of the beginning, which is why medals of the Christ Child were so often given at Christmas or at a baptism.
