The character of the Child's Crucifix in the Latin American form is in its foot, where the shaft opens into a broad openwork rosette of looped petals, almost a flower carrying the cross above it. The arms end in pierced trefoils, a scalloped halo spreads behind the head, and the corpus is slight and long-limbed in the way of country casting. Nothing is lettered; the whole statement is made in silhouette.
Crosses of this kind came out of small workshops across the Spanish colonies in the eighteenth century, where the trefoil arms stood for the Trinity and the flowering foot for the tree of life, the same theology the cathedrals were teaching, worked at village scale and in village hands. This reproduction keeps the slight irregularities of that hand-cut original rather than smoothing them away.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the crucifix's vintage character.
