The Cherub Crucifix ends at each of its three outer points in a pair of winged cherub heads modelled in deep relief, six small faces gathered at the extremities of the cross. Between them the arms are left plain and rounded, so the heads carry the whole design, and the corpus hangs at the center with the head fallen to the right.
Angel heads worked into cross terminals were a favorite device of eighteenth and nineteenth century devotional metalwork, and they are more than ornament. They place the Passion where the Church has always understood it to happen: in full view of heaven, with the angels attending the death of the one they were made to praise. The contrast between the heavy figure at the center and the light faces around it is the whole point of the piece.
The cherub crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves the crucifix's vintage character.
