The Vintage Bronze Celtic Spiral Crucifix with Rayed Nimbus is worked in the insular Celtic manner. A single tight spiral fills each of the four square terminals, the kind of coil that runs through Irish metalwork and manuscript ornament, and behind the head of Christ a plain raised disc sits inside a fan of incised rays. The corpus is slender, the arms held nearly level, the whole design flat and graphic rather than deeply modelled.
Above the arms a small furled scroll is lettered INRI, for Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, the title Pilate had fixed to the cross. The rayed nimbus behind the head answers it, since the Irish carvers liked to show the light of the resurrection already breaking around a figure still on the cross. Death and glory in the same small frame is very much the Celtic way of preaching.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
