The Vintage Bronze Branching Foliate Cross is a cross grown over with foliage. Each of the four arms ends in a pair of tight scrolled rosettes, and from the centre an openwork spray of leaves and buds branches out across the arms, cut through so the light passes behind it. The effect is of a living tree taking the shape of a cross.
That idea is one of the oldest in Christian art. The cross is the tree of life planted a second time, the dead wood that flowers, and folk workshops across Latin America returned to it for centuries, letting the leaves run free rather than ruling them into symmetry. The scrolled terminals and the loose, generous branching here belong squarely to that tradition, and the antique original is recorded as Latin American.
