The Vintage Bronze Arts and Crafts Flowered Cross is a graphic and unusually confident design. There is no corpus. A single stylized flower opens at the top of the upright with its leaves running out along the arms, a slender stem descends the lower shaft to a bud, and the flat terminals are stamped with a repeating band of beads and small blossoms.
The antique original is dated 1880, right at the beginning of the Arts and Crafts movement, when designers were turning away from machine ornament and back toward hand-drawn plant forms. The cross in flower is a far older Christian idea in that new dress: the dead wood that came into bloom, the tree of the crucifixion carrying the fruit of Easter. Read as pure pattern or read as the whole of the Resurrection, it works either way.
The flowered cross was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
