The Art Nouveau Lily Crucifix is drawn almost entirely in curves. Its arms are looping stems that swell into lily buds at every end, and the ground between them is pierced clean through, so the cross reads as a growing thing rather than as two beams. The corpus is long and slender in the Art Nouveau manner, with a small titulus above the head lettered INRI.
Those four letters abbreviate Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews, the charge Pilate ordered fixed above the cross and meant as mockery. The lily is the old emblem of purity and of the Resurrection, and working it into the very structure of the cross turns an instrument of execution into a stem in flower, which is exactly what the Church claims happened on the third day.
The crucifix was faithfully reproduced from an antique original and cast in the USA using a traditional fine-detail casting process that preserves its vintage character.
