St. Agnes was a Roman virgin martyr of about thirteen years old, killed under Diocletian c. 304 for refusing marriage and consecrating her virginity to Christ.
Named in the Roman Canon and one of the most venerated of the early Roman martyrs; her name (lamb) is associated with the blessing of lambs at her basilica each year.
