Anglo-Saxon bishop (c. 633-709), Northumbrian aristocrat trained at Lindisfarne and Rome; principal advocate at the Synod of Whitby (664) for the Roman date of Easter and the Roman tonsure. Bishop of York, then of Hexham; thrice deposed and twice appealed successfully to Rome. Pioneered Roman authority in the English Church. Pre-Congregation.
