British virgin martyr (4th-5th century, traditional), legendary princess who according to medieval romance made a pilgrimage to Rome with eleven thousand virgin companions and was massacred at Cologne by the Huns on her return. The numerical hyperbole arose from misreading of the inscription "XI MM VV" (interpreted "eleven thousand virgins" rather than "eleven martyred virgins"). Pre-Congregation; biography wholly legendary but cultus ancient.
