English Jesuit priest and martyr (1575-1608), Cambridge-trained, ordained at Valladolid; arrested in connection with (though innocent of) the Gunpowder Plot, exiled 1606, returned and was rearrested and hanged at Tyburn 1608. Among the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales canonized 1970 by Paul VI.
