Italian Dominican theologian and philosopher (1225-1274), of the Counts of Aquino; entered the Dominicans against his family's intentions, studied at Paris and Cologne under St. Albert the Great. Master of the great theological synthesis of Aristotle and Christian doctrine; author of the "Summa Theologiae," "Summa contra Gentiles," biblical commentaries, and Eucharistic hymns. Doctor of the Church (1567), "Doctor Communis." Canonized 1323 by John XXII.
