Roman beggar (d. c. 590), paralytic from infancy who lived all his life on the steps of the porch of San Clemente in Rome; what he received in alms he shared with other beggars, and bought books that pilgrims read to him as a continuous lectio. Subject of a chapter of Pope Gregory the Great's "Dialogues."
