Roman martyr (c. 256-c. 288), captain of the Praetorian Guard at Milan and Rome; secretly Christian, denounced under Diocletian and shot with arrows (the famous iconographic moment), nursed back to health by St. Irene of Rome, then publicly clubbed to death when he again confessed Christ. Patron of athletes, soldiers, and against plague. Pre-Congregation.
