French abbot (c. 1028-1111), Champenois Benedictine who founded Molesme (1075) and, when its observance had relaxed, with Sts. Alberic and Stephen Harding founded the New Monastery of Cîteaux (1098)—the cradle of the Cistercian Order. Returned to Molesme on papal command. Canonized 1222 by Honorius III.
