Catalan Mercedarian (c. 1204-1240), called Nonnatus ("not born") because delivered by Caesarean section after his mother's death; entered the Mercedarians and ransomed many Christian captives in North Africa, eventually offering himself as substitute hostage at Algiers, where his lips were padlocked to prevent preaching. Created cardinal by Gregory IX (1239) and recalled to Rome but died on the journey. Equipollent canonization 1657 by Alexander VII.
