Italian pope (1835-1914), Giuseppe Sarto, Venetian peasant-born parish priest who rose to be Patriarch of Venice and was elected pope in 1903. Lowered the age of First Communion (Quam singulari, 1910), promoted frequent Communion, condemned Modernism (Lamentabili, Pascendi, 1907), reformed the Roman Curia and the Breviary, and began the codification of canon law. First pope canonized since Pius V; canonized 1954 by Pius XII.
