Italian Dominican pope (1504-1572), Antonio Ghislieri, peasant-born friar and inquisitor general before his election in 1566. Implemented the Council of Trent: published the Tridentine Roman Catechism, the reformed Roman Breviary (1568) and Missal (1570) that bore his name until 1969. Organized the Holy League whose victory at Lepanto (1571) saved the Mediterranean from the Ottomans; instituted Our Lady of Victory (now Our Lady of the Rosary, October 7). Canonized 1712 by Clement XI.
