Devotion to St. Philomena flourished after the discovery in 1802 of her tomb in the Catacomb of Priscilla in Rome, with an inscription identifying her as a virgin martyr and a vial believed to contain her blood. Promoted by St. John Vianney and approved as a public devotion by Pope Gregory XVI in 1837, she became one of the most beloved saints of nineteenth-century Catholicism, credited with countless miracles. Her cult was removed from the General Roman Calendar in 1961 due to historical questions about her identity, but her devotion remains widespread among the faithful, particularly at the shrine of Mugnano del Cardinale in Italy.
