Chief of the Apostles (1st century BC/AD-c. 64), Galilean fisherman Simon son of John, surnamed Cephas/Peter ("rock") by Jesus, on whom he founded the Church (Mt 16:18); first to confess Christ as Son of God and the first apostle granted a Resurrection appearance. First Bishop of Antioch and of Rome, where he was crucified head down on Vatican Hill under Nero. Author of two New Testament letters. Joint feast with St. Paul June 29.
