Spanish priest, pioneer of lay education, and founder of the Teresian Association, an institute of consecrated lay women devoted to Catholic formation through teaching. He developed his vocation in the cave-dwellings of the Romani poor in Guadix, where he established schools and homes for impoverished children. Arrested for his priesthood at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, he was executed in Madrid in July 1936 with the words 'I am a priest of Christ.'
