Romano-British missionary bishop (c. 385-461), "Apostle of Ireland"; captured at age 16 by Irish raiders, enslaved as a herdsman in Ireland for six years before escaping back to Britain. Returned to Ireland as bishop c. 432 and labored some thirty years for the conversion of the country. Author of the autobiographical "Confessio" and "Letter to Coroticus"—the earliest surviving documents from Christian Ireland. Pre-Congregation.
