Bishop / Founder
German founder and archbishop (c. 1080-1134), Rhenish nobleman whose conversion came when he was thrown from his horse in a thunderstorm; founded the Order of Premonstratensian Canons (Norbertines) at Prémontré in 1120. Archbishop of Magdeburg from 1126; reformer and defender of the real presence against the heretic Tanchelm. Canonized 1582 by Gregory XIII.
