Greek archbishop (c. 330-397), Cilician former praetor of Constantinople, baptized only at his consecration; succeeded St. Gregory Nazianzen as archbishop of Constantinople from 381 (presided over the rest of the First Council of Constantinople after Gregory's resignation) until his death. Predecessor of St. John Chrysostom. Pre-Congregation.
