Greek bishop and missionary (c. 815-885), elder brother of St. Cyril, with whom from 862 he evangelized the Slavs of Great Moravia at the request of Prince Rastislav; together they devised the Glagolitic alphabet for the Slavonic translation of the liturgy and Scripture. Archbishop of Moravia from 869, after Cyril's death continued the mission alone. Co-patron of Europe (with Cyril); pre-Congregation.
