Apostle and evangelist, called by Jesus from a tax-collector's table at Capernaum (Mt 9:9; Mk 2:14; Lk 5:27, where he is named Levi); attributed author of the first Gospel. Tradition variously sends him to evangelize Ethiopia, Persia, or Parthia, where he is variously said to have died a martyr.
