1st-century evangelist, identified with John Mark of Acts (kinsman of St. Barnabas, companion of Paul and Peter); author of the second Gospel, traditionally written at Rome based on St. Peter's preaching. Founder and first bishop of Alexandria, where tradition makes him a martyr. Pre-Congregation.
