Scottish Jesuit (1579-1615), Calvinist convert to Catholicism who returned secretly from the Continent to Scotland in 1613; arrested at Glasgow, refused to acknowledge royal supremacy under torture, and hanged. The only post-Reformation Scottish saint; canonized 1976 by Paul VI.
