Portuguese-Spanish founder (1495-1550), former soldier and shepherd whose conversion at age 40 in Granada under the preaching of St. John of Avila led him to dedicate himself to the sick and homeless. Founder of the Hospitaller Order of the Brothers of St. John of God. Canonized 1690 by Alexander VIII.
